Gel coat and automotive clear coat are different materials with different failure modes, and treating one like the other is how boats get ruined. Gel coat is a thick, porous, pigmented polyester surface. When UV breaks down its surface resin, the exposed pigment oxidizes into that chalky, faded film every boat owner recognizes — and unlike paint, it is thick enough to be compounded back to gloss if you catch it in time.
