Overview

Cabins live in constant damp. Everything follows from that.

A boat interior is a sealed damp box for most of the year, and everything that goes wrong inside one follows from that single fact. Moisture comes aboard on gear and clothing, condensation forms on every cold surface overnight, and the space is closed up for weeks between uses. Mildew starts in cushion foam, along hull liners, behind lockers and in the headliner long before anyone smells it.

The smell is the symptom people call about, and it is why air fresheners never solve it. Odour lives in the foam and the porous surfaces, not in the air, so anything that works has to reach the material itself. Steam kills growth at the source in seams and cushions, hot-water extraction pulls the contamination and the moisture back out rather than pushing it deeper, and ozone treatment neutralises what remains at a molecular level.

The surfaces aboard need genuinely different handling from a car interior. Marine vinyl is UV-abused and cracks if it dries out. Teak greys and needs its own cleaning and oiling regime — and aggressive scrubbing destroys the soft grain permanently. Isinglass and clear vinyl windows haze or craze for good if you use the wrong product on them, and replacing enclosure panels is expensive enough that this is the single most avoidable mistake owners make.

The timing that matters most is before storage, not after. Pulling moisture, salt and organic growth out of a cabin before it sits closed for six months prevents the damage rather than repairing it. Most of the worst interiors we see got that way over one wet winter of sitting sealed and untouched.

The process

Every step, in order

  1. 01

    Assessment & moisture check

We look for the source — condensation points, leaks, damp lockers — because cleaning without finding it just resets the clock.

  2. 02

    Strip out & dry vacuum

Cushions and soft goods lifted, loose debris removed before any moisture is introduced.

  3. 03

    Steam & sanitation

Steam through seams, lockers, headliner and hull liner. Kills mildew at the source rather than bleaching the surface.

  4. 04

    Upholstery extraction

Hot-water extraction on cushions and fabric so contamination and water both come back out.

  5. 05

    Surface care

Marine vinyl cleaned and conditioned, teak cleaned and treated, isinglass cleaned with the correct products only.

  6. 06

    Odour treatment

Ozone treatment to neutralise residual odour molecules rather than masking them.

  7. 07

    Ventilation guidance

What to leave open, what to run and how to store — the part that keeps it from coming straight back.

Super friendly, great work, best price. Offered very clear instructions on what they would proceed, options, even suggested a less expensive option for me. Honest, friendly, professional. And my car looks amazing!

I had tried for months to remove 10+ bumper stickers from the back of my car to no avail. They went the extra mile and the back of my car is now completely free of all stickers and residue. Fantastic customer service.

They did an amazing job and went above and beyond to work on my car right around the holidays. They took extra steps to work with my schedule which I deeply appreciated. I definitely recommend Albrecht!

FAQ

Questions, answered

Usually, yes. Musty smell means organic growth and moisture in cushion foam, headliner and porous surfaces — not in the air, which is why sprays and fresheners never work. Steam kills it at the source, extraction pulls it out, and ozone neutralises what remains. We also look for the moisture source, because cleaning without fixing that just restarts the clock.
