Is ceramic coating worth it in the Pacific Northwest?

It rains here roughly nine months of the year, so a fair question follows: if the sun is not baking your paint, does a ceramic coating actually earn its money? The answer is yes for most vehicles in this county, but not for the reason most shops give — and there is a real category of vehicle where we tell people to spend their money elsewhere.

What a coating actually does

A ceramic coating is a nano-ceramic layer that chemically bonds to your clear coat and becomes part of the surface. It is not a wax, and it is not a sealant. Waxes sit on top and wash off in weeks. A coating bonds and stays, and what it gives you is a hard, slick, sacrificial layer that contamination cannot grip.

That distinction matters, because it means a coating solves chemical problems, not physical ones. It resists staining, etching, oxidation and light wash marring. It does nothing whatsoever against a rock thrown off a gravel truck. Anyone who tells you a 9H coating stops rock chips is either confused or selling.

Why the wet climate is the argument, not the objection

People assume UV is the enemy, and in Arizona it is. Here the enemy is different and arguably worse, because it works year-round instead of seasonally.

• Constant moisture keeps contamination chemically active on the paint surface instead of drying and blowing off.
• Salt air off Bellingham Bay, Drayton Harbor and the Strait deposits chloride continuously — it does not need a storm.
• Winter road treatment on I-5 and county roads puts salt and brine directly onto your paint at highway speed.
• Spring pollen and conifer sap, particularly in the Lake Whatcom communities, etch clear coat if left on warm panels.
• Agricultural fallout through Lynden and Everson is nitrogen-rich and chemically aggressive in the rain.

Every one of those is a bonding problem. A coating means the contamination lands on a sacrificial surface it cannot bond to, and releases with a rinse instead of a scrub. That is the whole mechanism.

The benefit people actually report

Ask a coated-car owner what changed and almost nobody leads with gloss. They lead with wash time. A wash that took ninety minutes takes twenty-five, and it takes twenty-five because you are rinsing rather than fighting bonded road film with a mitt.

That has a second-order effect that matters more than it sounds: because washing is easy, people wash more often. Because they wash more often and with less contact pressure, they put fewer swirls into their paint. The coating prevents damage partly by changing the owner's behaviour.

When we tell people not to do it

A coating is a poor buy in a few honest cases, and we would rather say so than take the booking.

• If you are selling the vehicle within a year, a good sealant gets you most of the appearance for a fraction of the cost.
• If the clear coat is already failing or peeling, a coating cannot save it and will not bond properly. That needs paint, not chemistry.
• If your real complaint is rock chips on the hood, you want paint protection film. A coating will not help and you will be disappointed.
• If the budget only stretches to a coating with no correction underneath, wait. Coating over swirls seals them in for years, and that is a worse outcome than an uncoated car.

What it costs and what decides the number

Coatings run from a couple of hundred dollars for an entry-level product on clean paint up to a few thousand for multi-stage correction with a lifetime-warranty package. Three things move the price: the size of the vehicle, the condition of the paint before we start, and how many years of protection you want. Paint condition is usually the biggest variable and the one people underestimate, because correction is where the labour hours actually go.
